Is it Time for Furnace Service or Replacement?

January 05, 2016

When winter hits and we start taking calls about furnaces that aren't generating heat, a lot of them can be linked back to irregular furnace service and maintenance. If furnace concerns are not taken care of, your system may suddenly stop working and leave you and your family in the cold. However, there are a couple warning signs you can be on the lookout for to know when it's time for furnace service or replacement before your system quits working.

Furnace Age

The average life expectancy of furnaces is between 12-17 years. If your furnace is 15 years or older it's a safe bet to start furnace shopping now. Selecting a new furnace isn't a decision you want to have to make in a hurry. Give yourself a bit of time to research and weigh all of your possibilities.

Increased Gas or Electric Bills

Furnaces lose efficiency as they get up there in years and your system will lose efficiency faster if it has not been appropriately maintained. Imagine the extra money you're paying to the utility company as money that could be going towards purchasing a new, more efficient system.

More Frequent Furnace Repairs

The last couple years of a furnace's life are when your system ends up with the most breakdowns. Start adding up the money you've been spending on furnace repair the previous two years - a new system may be more cost efficient.

Strange Noises

Have you heard any strange dings coming from your system? Furnaces start making odd noises near the end of their lifecycle. If your furnace is cycling on and off frequently or blowing chilly air, it's time to think about getting your system replaced.

A Dry or Dusty Home

Older furnaces don't humidify or filter the air in your home efficiently. Your home may start feeling stuffy and any family members with allergies could notice more symptoms. Some other red flags are: static shocks, drooping plants and cracking furniture.
